Car industry

Catalytic converters

Carmakers are among the biggest buyers of platinum, which cleans exhaust gases in catalytic converters, especially in diesel engines. Vehicle production, emissions rules and the spread of battery-electric cars, which need no catalyst, all shape demand.

Supply

Mines concentrated in South Africa

South Africa mines most of the world's platinum, with Russia and Zimbabwe next. Power shortages, strikes or safety stoppages at South African mines can tighten supply quickly.

Investment

A small market for investors

Platinum's market is far smaller than gold's, so buying or selling of bars, coins and exchange-traded funds can move it quickly. Priced in dollars, it also reacts to the dollar and at times follows gold.

Hydrogen

Fuel cells and electrolysers

Platinum is a key catalyst in hydrogen fuel cells and in some of the electrolysers that make hydrogen from water. Progress or setbacks in clean-hydrogen projects can shift long-term expectations for its demand.

When platinum is most active

Platinum is open almost around the clock on weekdays, stopping for an hour at the New York close, from 17:00 to 18:00 New York time. As a much smaller market than gold, it trades most in London and New York hours, above all while both are open, from about 8:00 to 12:00 New York time, and outside them spreads can widen. The LBMA Platinum Price is set twice each business day in London.

Platinum at a glance

  • XPT/USD is the price of one troy ounce of platinum in US dollars.
  • One XBTFX lot is 100 ounces, so the 0.01-lot minimum trade is one ounce, and first-tier leverage is 40:1, lower than on gold.
  • Platinum and palladium (XPD/USD) are platinum-group metals, often mined from the same ores.

Exposure-based margin

How XPTUSD leverage and margin bands work.

XPTUSD margin is applied incrementally by total notional exposure in this symbol. Crossing a threshold does not reprice exposure already assigned to lower bands; only additional exposure uses the next rate.

Understand Platinum trading before opening a position.

What is platinum used for?
Catalytic converters for cars and trucks are one of its biggest uses. It also goes into jewellery, chemical and oil-refining catalysts, glass making and investment bars and coins, with newer uses in hydrogen fuel cells and electrolysers.
How much do I need to trade platinum?
The minimum trade is 0.01 lots, which is one ounce. For example, at a platinum price of about $1,580 that is a position worth about $1,580, and at the first-tier leverage of 40:1 its margin is about $40. Leverage steps down as your exposure grows, and you need more than the margin in your account to absorb moves against you.
Can I go short on platinum?
Yes. A CFD lets you sell XPT/USD as easily as you buy it, for example if you expect weaker car production. Platinum can jump on supply problems in South Africa, though, and a short position loses money when the price rises, more so with leverage.
How is platinum different from gold?
Gold is driven mainly by investors and central banks, platinum mainly by industry and carmakers. Platinum's market is much smaller and its mine supply is concentrated in South Africa, so it can move independently of gold for long periods, often with sharper swings.
What is XPTUSD (XPT/USD)?
XPTUSD is Platinum quoted against the US dollar. The displayed price represents the USD value of one troy ounce, while one standard XBTFX lot represents 100 ounces.
Do I own physical Platinum when I trade XPTUSD?
No. XPTUSD is a leveraged CFD, not a purchase of bullion. It provides price exposure but no ownership, storage claim or delivery right over physical Platinum.
What moves the XPTUSD price?
XPTUSD can respond to the US dollar, real yields, interest-rate expectations, physical and industrial demand, supply conditions and changes in market risk. Spreads can widen in volatile or thin markets.
How is leverage applied to XPTUSD?
XPTUSD uses published exposure-based margin bands. The schedule is tied to notional exposure in this symbol, not account balance. Only exposure added above a threshold uses the next margin rate.
Can I trade XPTUSD with Pro or Standard pricing?
Yes, subject to account and platform availability. Pro uses a raw variable spread plus USD 2.75 commission per USD 100,000 traded. Standard uses a wider all-in spread without a separate commission line.
