CPI Week, Wall Street Records and CFTC’s Leverage Rules: What Moves Markets Next

CPI Week, Wall Street Records and CFTC’s Leverage Rules: What Moves Markets Next

October 11, 2026 — Wednesday’s US CPI report headlines a crowded week, with the dollar near a six-month high and traders still pricing a Fed hike by December. Last week’s weak payrolls did not remove that risk.

Around the data, the S&P 500 sits just below a record as bank earnings open, the CFTC has launched a rulebook for leveraged crypto trading, and Hurricane Isaias shut in most of the Gulf’s oil output.

Key Takeaways

  • September CPI lands Wednesday, October 14, with consensus at 3.6% year over year
  • Analysts expect a Fed hold on October 28, while markets price a 70-80% chance of a December hike
  • The S&P 500 sits just below its record as bank earnings open, with Q3 profits forecast to jump over 30%
  • The CFTC’s October 5 proposal would create an optional federal route for leveraged retail crypto trading
  • Hurricane Isaias shut in about 63% of Gulf of Mexico oil output, while gold holds near $4,200

CPI Week Tests the Dollar’s Six-Month High

The Fed raised rates last month for the first time since 2023, Reuters reported, so September CPI now steers the next decision. It arrives Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. ET. Consensus forecasts put headline inflation at 3.6% from 3.4%, with energy doing the damage, while core prices are expected to cool to +0.2% on the month.

That split drives FX. The Dollar Index closed Friday near 101.9, its strongest in six months, and USD/JPY has stayed below roughly 158.50. EUR/USD broke below roughly $1.13, and analysts see downside risk toward $1.11.

Policy is tightening beyond the Fed: the Reserve Bank of India raised rates 25 bps and shifted to “calibrated tightening.” Our interest rate effect guide explains how shifting rate odds ripple through Forex.

Wall Street Nears Another Record as Bank Earnings Open

The S&P 500 closed at 7,811.54 on Friday, up 0.6% and just shy of Tuesday’s record, its first record close since mid-August, per Yahoo. The index is up more than 13% this year, with the Nasdaq also posting records.

Earnings are the next test. JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs report this week, and S&P 500 profits are expected to jump more than 30% in the third quarter, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters.

Bar chart: S&P 500 up over 13% this year, Q3 earnings expected to grow over 30%

NBC News relays Goldman Sachs estimates that Nvidia and Micron could account for about a third of that growth, with Nvidia nearing a $6 trillion market value.

The risk is the rate path: a hot CPI could challenge a rally built on earnings optimism and a steady Fed. Traders can follow the benchmark through US500 index CFDs and single names through stock CFDs.

CFTC Opens a Federal Lane for Leveraged Crypto Trading

With the Clarity Act stalled after a 49-50 Senate cloture vote on September 15, regulators are moving first. On October 5, CFTC Chair Michael Selig published an advance notice covering Regulation CTX and Regulation CAM, aimed at retail crypto trading offered with leverage, margin or financing.

Registration would be optional. Terms under consideration include futures commission merchant intermediation and proof-of-reserves duties, with a new “crypto asset market” category. Comments are due 60 days after Federal Register publication.

Selig said the move helps ensure America “remains the crypto capital of the world,” per the CFTC release.

The SEC is moving in parallel: comments on its Regulation Crypto Assets proposal close October 20, and a five-year exemption already covers on-chain trading of tokenized stocks. Our Clarity Act explainer covers the Senate backdrop.

Hurricane Isaias, Iran Talks and Gold Near $4,200

Hurricane Isaias reached Category 3 on Friday, and federal data showed nearly 63% of Gulf of Mexico oil output, about 1.28 million barrels a day, shut in, up from roughly 25% on Wednesday. An eastward track has so far limited damage to Gulf facilities.

Brent topped $104 on Thursday before easing after President Trump said no attack on Iran was planned before the November 3 midterms. Gold rose about 0.9% to roughly $4,170 as oil and Treasury yields slipped. Traders can follow both through metals and energy CFDs.

Conclusion

Inflation, central banks and regulators are repricing risk across every asset class at once. A hot CPI could extend the dollar’s rally and test record-high equities and gold, while a softer print would challenge December hike pricing. Meanwhile, regulators are not waiting for Congress, so leveraged traders should expect clearer, tighter rules.
